It sure was a thrilling game yesterday between the U.S. and Belgium. I watched the match in the appropriately titled Ashland, Oregon venue of Louie’s (since Louie is the name of the hero in my book, World Cup Mouse).
Even though the U.S. was out-played for most of the game, they never gave up and even almost won it at the end of regulation time, and then almost came back and forced penalty kicks at the end of extra time. It was a valiant effort.
Welsh journalist Blake Welton wrote in today’s The Daily Post, “The USA, often derided as a ‘Mickey Mouse’ footballing country playing a ‘Mickey Mouse’ league littered with European has-beens, have finally come of age this tournament…They are a proper football side now and what they lack in overall quality more than make up on passion, courage, conviction and determination.”
Passion, courage, conviction and determination – these attributes describe Louie LaSurie, the World Cup Mouse. (No offense, Mickey.) As the human girl, Rose, tells Louie LaSurie, “You inspire me. You never give up.”
Well done, U.S., and well-played, Belgium!
